The stated reason for keeping the elk away is a disease called brucellosis, which causes spontaneous abortion in cattle and is carried by elk. The real reason is that the range cannot support both cattle and elk. The trouble now is that a far more serious and inevitably fatal disease, called chronic wasting disease, is approaching the elk feed grounds — where it could be catastrophic.
